You should check out esp32smartdisplay, there are some similar devices. Unfortunately it may require adding a new driver for the device and digging through the docs.

Yes, but they don't use PlatformIO in those examples. They use ESP-IDF and Arduino IDE in their examples which doesn't help in the creation of a ESP32-S3-TOUCH-LCD-5.json To use PlatformIO we need an ESP32-S3-TOUCH-LCD-5.json file. I've found the ESP32-S3-TOUCH-LCD-5 definition in the C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Arduino15\packages\esp32\hardware\esp32\3.2.0\boards.txt file, but it is not much help. It is extremely verbose and includes all kinds of things that Arduino IDE evidently uses, but PlatformIO doesn't. I'm struggling along trying to decipher what each property does in the custom_board.json file. It would be awfully nice to have a boards.txt to custom_board.json tool as requested by this other noob as well.

Hm I did not even realize there were some officially provided board jsons! Even if they are not perfectly correct.

I suggest you look at esp32smartdisplay. I was using that for about the past 10 months and was able to successfully add a different waveshare device (esp32-s3 2.8). I think they have one other waveshare board on there implemented by somebody else too. OP would have much better luck gathering this sort of info from a project revolving around these types of boards, like smartdisplay

I will say, as of literally just yesterday, I stopped using esp32smartdisplay and instead used waveshares official example code with some slight modifications in my project instead.

We currently intend to implement waveshare boards 2.8, 2.8b, 3.5b, and likely 3.5. The benefit of this is that we do not have to convert all of waveshares code/board specific info over to the board.json with all of its various features defined for smart display. Although smart display is technically really powerful, it was a huge struggle to get the 2.8 board json correct and working with it, and even still it had a few issues. We also tried to support 3.5b but smartdisplay doesn't even support qspi yet. It made much more sense with my project to just implement the code waveshare supplied for the board setup, rather than create a fullly qualified board.json that specifies every bit of the board. This leaves you with only having to specify the most basic info about the board, such as the chip and flash size etc, all easy to find.

@gopro2027 thanks for the info. It got me pointed in the right direction. I've created a waveshare_esp32s3_touch_lcd_5.json file with some things specific to my board and changed the "partitions": "default_16MB.csv". It was "partitions": "default_8MB.csv" for some reason. Also the "upload": {"flash_size": "16MB"} was at 8MB. No idea why! The ESP32S3 has 16MB flash. Seems like they were simply using generic values. Unless I'm missing something... Guess we'll find out...

I checked out your repo. Cool! I gained some insight into how to use platformio.ini to my advantage.

I’m searching the best library to start it. Yea i think its unlikely you will find what you are looking for, especially with the B model. I suggest you just take the example code waveshare provides for it and work with that. Then you can create a board.json with the info provided on the wiki. This is essentially what i have been doing with my waveshare boards.

@Paraminobenzino if you're using LVGL with TFT_eSPI, I think you can simply change the resolutions to match your screen.

In TFT_eSPI's User_Setup.h change:

#define TFT_WIDTH  1024

In your main program you'll need to define the resolution and calculate the buffer for LVGL

@Paraminobenzino I see I answered too quickly. I checked out the tutorial for this board and it tells you how to change the resolution in the 08_DrawColorBar section.

Well, the problem is : my board is a 5B.
