how to run the code? missing instructions and main package

Hi @iainjreid Just checking in on the repo. Can we add some instructions to have a minimum running code atleast.

Based on your comment looks like it can probably be used with postgres with less features.
I would be interested in contributing if needed to help add more features if this is functional.
