Cannot unmount directory with fusermount (on nfs filesystem?) after mounting

Normally, I would unmount a fuse filesystem mountpoint with fusermount -u mntpoint

But on the work linux machine, where my home dir is an NFS file system, I cannot, instead I get the error:

fusermount: failed to chdir to /home/....../dev/fuse-netcdf/trial: Permission denied

Most of the proposed solutions to this require sudo privileges, which I don't have at work.
