[BUG] Report Page Tooltips

I'm using a single measure to generate my HTML and I would like a report page tooltip to appear on hover. It looks like supported functionality but doesn't seem to work. Are any additional steps required to make this work (the docs don't seem to cover report page tooltips).

Report page tooltips require suitable context for Power BI to reconcile them, and this isn't sufficient with a single measure. I just checked the doc, and it's probably not explicitly mentioned, but it is covered in the short video on the page (approx. 0:30 - 0:46), e.g.:

I'd need to know more about your specific case. Still, assuming you have multiple elements in your measure that intend to trigger different report page tooltips depending on what you hover, that's not going to be possible. The selection ID for HTML Content is created at the row level, so if you had a scalar value that you want to trigger a tooltip on, that might be possible by fudging the Granularity role or adding an associated measure from your report page to the Tooltips role to hook the report page tooltip APIs, but I have a nagging feeling that if you have added specific tooltip data attributes to your DOM, this may fuzz the logic. I'd need to know more about what you were trying to do to see if there's a way to manage it with current functionality, or if there may be a compromise we could make given the situation and lack of context that flattening your HTML into a measure offers.

Thanks @dm-p . I'm not using the granularity role and have just a single measure. I've provided a sample workbook. I have a single measure with some basic HTML.

I'm expecting that when I hover anywhere over the HTML visual, I should see my report page tooltip. In this case no context is required - I just want to see a static report page tooltip I have configured (in the same way I would do with a native card visual).

For your example, the suggestion of fudging the Granularity role works if you add your dummy column and set this to "Do not summarize":

This isn't ideal, but it may work for you under the current logic.

Upon reviewing the code, there is no obvious reason why the identity isn't sent outside of this, as we request it for every update, regardless of whether the Granularity role is present or not. It would appear to be a limitation of Power BI's table mapping that at least one of the mapped roles has to be a column, and if they're all measures, then this isn't enough.

For this to work without a column in the dataset, we might have to change the data view mapping from table to categorical, which it would seem we did in Deneb 0.3 for similar reasons.

It had zero net effect in Deneb for end users, as all (base) fields are unprocessed, and it's up to the developer how they are used, but it wasn't a minor change to implement, and also changes how identities are generated as they are now category/series/measure specific rather than row-level. It also wasn't yet live in AppSource, and we probably had about five people using the public preview, so it wasn't a significant problem.

With HTML Content, we have defined roles. It's also a much more popular visual than Deneb, and we may need to do more rigorous testing around such a change to ensure there's no regressions. I'm also blocked from getting HTML Content (lite) through AppSource due to more stringent certification rules, which I'm working through, although this will have an impact on how quickly I can deploy changes if they are successful.
