Multi node deployment question

Hello
Being a newbie to WF core, can you please  elaborate on muti-node  deployment  execution.
Specifically, can WF steps can be executed by different nodes ?
On which nodes are middleware executed ? Are they guaranteed to be be executed on the same node that runs the step body ?
