Is it possible to make places of interest clickable?

You are correct - there is no option to add places in Leaflet.GridLayer.GoogleMutant (which this library uses to load google maps into leaflet).
You can open an issue for them here:

Or use the underlying map that is initialized during the initialization process - it should look like this:
