In activity diagrams, it's very common for only a subset of the individuals on the diagram to be participate in any given activity. When modelling sub-activities, all individuals are still shown cluttering the diagram and reducing clarity for what is trying to be communicated. It would be a useful feature to hide individuals not currently participating in any activity in the current view to simplify large diagrams and improve the readability.
Basic Example
Load the crane example and create a few more individuals that don't participate in any activity. It is these new individuals that could be optionally hidden.
Drawbacks
Missing individuals could be misinterpreted as elements being deleted.
Activities that now have a hidden individual now participate may cause the layout to regenerate in a completely different layout.
